Climate Change Risk in Finance

Institution:

The University of Edinburgh

This online course for financial professionals looks at how to navigate climate data, measure risks and gain reliable insights for financial decision making.Assessment of financial risk associated with climate change increasingly informs decision-making in global capital markets. The Financial Stability Board’s Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) has set out a high-level framework for disclosing both climate risks and opportunities in financial reports. Financial regulatory authorities are also beginning to move towards the mandatory disclosure of these risks. In parallel, central banks are increasingly integrating climate risks into their activities and supervisory authorities are calling for the integration of climate risk information into financial stability monitoring (stress testing) and micro-supervision (scenario analysis). The desire of business, governments and regulators to understand climate change risk in finance means we need to find ways to translate insights from climate science and climate modelling into micro and macroeconomic impacts, and eventually into financial risks. In this 12 week course, you will explore:

  • Climate change fundamentals and terminology.
  • How to translate complex climate information so it can be used in financial decision-making.
  • How to assess and quantify the direct risks arising from climate change on physical assets, businesses, and portfolios, as well as the near-term disruptive impacts associated with mitigation policies, changing preferences and ongoing technological change.
  • The impact of climate change on different financial asset classes, including equity markets and fixed-income markets.
  • The legal frameworks which govern climate change and climate risk litigation.
  • The emerging theories of sustainable finance and how to apply these learnings in practice.

The course content is delivered by climate finance experts, while live sessions provide an opportunity to share, reflect, and engage with other practitioners. You don’t need any prior knowledge or training to join this course.
